We broke our own SEO in a relaunch — and fixed it with redirects

Here's one we're not proud of. We rebuilt techchaps.com on a new platform, and in the process every URL changed — and we shipped it without redirects. Google was still sending people to the old addresses, and every one of them hit a 404. Organic search, our biggest channel, fell close to 90%.

    Key Takeaways

    • A relaunch changed every URL with no redirects — old links 404'd and organic traffic fell close to 90%.
    • We mapped each traffic-earning old URL to its closest live page and shipped 40 permanent (301) redirects.
    • Lesson: map old URLs to new and ship the redirects on day one of any relaunch.

    The fix was unglamorous

The fix was unglamorous. We pulled the analytics to find which old URLs had actually earned traffic, mapped each to its closest live page, and shipped 40 permanent (301) redirects — so link equity now flows to the right page instead of a dead end.

    The lesson in one line

Before you relaunch a site, map your old URLs to the new ones and ship the redirects on day one. We publish our own mistakes because the fix is more useful than the highlight reel.
